What should you know about pleomorphic LCIS?

LCIS begins in the milk-producing lobules. In the pleomorphic form, the cells look more abnormal under the microscope and may show features such as marked variation in size or shape, cell death, or a pattern that resembles some non-invasive breast changes. The cells remain within the lobular unit, so the finding is not an invasive cancer diagnosis. However, its appearance can make the result more clinically significant than classic LCIS.

A pathology review may compare the biopsy with mammogram or other breast imaging. The report may also mention whether the sample is limited, whether calcifications were removed, and whether the pathologist recommends excision. These details matter because a small biopsy may not show the whole area.

Ask for a breast multidisciplinary review or specialist appointment so the pathology, imaging, and examination are considered together. Your team may recommend removing additional tissue to check the surrounding area, particularly when the imaging finding is not fully explained by the biopsy. In other situations, close imaging follow-up may be discussed. The choice depends on the report, the quality of the sample, your breast history, and your preferences.

Tell your breast team about a new lump, nipple change, bloody discharge, skin tethering, or a persistent change in breast shape.
