Lateral Plica Knee

Short answer
Lateral plica knee symptoms may come from an irritated synovial fold rubbing during movement; treatment commonly reduces aggravating activity, restores strength and considers arthroscopy only when symptoms persist.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- Repeated knee bending or a sudden activity increase.
- First approach
- Activity adjustment followed by targeted rehabilitation.
Understanding a lateral plica
A plica is a fold of the thin lining inside the knee. It can become sensitive after repeated bending, kneeling, running or a change in activity. Outer-knee discomfort, tenderness, clicking and a feeling of rubbing may occur, but these symptoms overlap with other knee problems. A clinician uses the history and physical examination to distinguish plica irritation from cartilage, meniscus or kneecap conditions.
How it is managed
Temporarily reduce movements that repeatedly provoke the pain, then return to them gradually. Ice after activity may soothe symptoms, and pain medicine should be chosen with advice if you have stomach, kidney, heart or other health concerns. Physiotherapy may address thigh and hip strength, flexibility and movement technique. If symptoms continue despite a suitable rehabilitation period, knee arthroscopy may be discussed to inspect the joint and treat an irritated plica when appropriate.
When to seek care
Arrange assessment if pain persists, swelling develops, the knee locks, or clicking is accompanied by sharp pain or loss of movement. Seek prompt care after a major injury if you cannot bear weight, the knee looks deformed, or swelling appears quickly.
Useful questions
Ask what examination findings support plica irritation, which activity should be modified, how to progress exercises, whether another condition could explain locking, and when arthroscopy would add value.

Questions people ask
Does every knee click mean plica syndrome?
No. Clicking can have several causes, so pain, swelling, locking and examination findings help guide the diagnosis.
When is arthroscopy considered?
It may be considered when persistent symptoms have not improved with appropriate non-surgical care and the clinical findings support an irritated plica.
