What should you know about latent syphilis?

Syphilis is caused by bacteria that can remain in the body after early signs have disappeared or when no signs were noticed. A latent stage is identified through blood testing and the timing of infection may be uncertain. Not having a sore or rash does not show that the infection has gone. Without treatment, syphilis can affect the nervous system, eyes, heart or blood vessels later, and infection during pregnancy can harm a developing baby. A clinician interprets test results alongside past results, symptoms, treatment history and sexual health information.

Arrange a private clinical appointment to confirm the diagnosis and establish whether earlier treatment was completed. Antibiotic treatment is selected according to the stage, test pattern, allergy history, pregnancy status and other medical details. Complete the prescribed course and attend follow-up blood tests if advised. Avoid sexual contact until your clinician explains when it is safer, and tell recent partners that they may need assessment; this protects their health and helps prevent reinfection. Do not rely on the absence of symptoms to judge whether treatment worked.

Contact a clinician promptly if you are pregnant, have new vision changes, hearing changes, severe headache, weakness, numbness, confusion or difficulty walking. Seek urgent care for sudden loss of vision, sudden weakness, severe confusion or a rapidly worsening headache. These symptoms can have causes other than syphilis, but they need timely assessment. After treatment, fever or flu-like symptoms can occur; ask in advance what to do and seek advice if the reaction is severe or worrying.
