Lat Muscle Strain: Symptoms and Care

How the structures involved in Muscle Strain differ from normal

Short answer

A lat muscle strain can cause localized pain and tightness during pulling or overhead movement; rest from provoking activity and gradual recovery are usually appropriate.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common location
Side of the back, beneath the shoulder blade, or back of the armpit
Often triggered by
Pulling, lifting, throwing, or overhead movement
Early focus
Reduce provoking load while maintaining comfortable motion

What it can mean

The latissimus dorsi is a broad muscle running from the lower back toward the upper arm. A strain can occur when it is overloaded by lifting, rowing, climbing, throwing, or a sudden stretch. Pain may sit beneath the shoulder blade, along the side of the ribs, or near the back of the armpit. Muscle Strain may also produce tenderness, guarding, or discomfort when taking a deep breath or reaching overhead.

A sharp pain during one movement is different from the more diffuse ache that can follow unfamiliar exercise. Back Muscle Spasm, bruising, a shoulder problem, or rib pain can feel similar, so persistent or marked symptoms deserve an examination.

What to do now

For the first stage, reduce lifting, pulling, and overhead work that reproduces pain. Keep the shoulder and trunk moving gently within a comfortable range rather than holding them rigid. Cold or warmth may feel helpful; protect the skin and stop if either worsens symptoms. Return to training in stages, beginning with easy movement and increasing load only when ordinary activity is comfortable.

A physiotherapist can assess strength, movement, and technique, then tailor rehabilitation. Do not test the injury with heavy rows or pull-ups while pain is sharp. Muscle soreness after exercise usually eases with rest, whereas a distinct painful event or ongoing loss of function warrants more attention.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt care for severe pain, substantial bruising or swelling, a visible change in the muscle, marked weakness, numbness, or inability to lift the arm. Seek urgent help for chest pain, difficult breathing, or pain after major trauma. If symptoms are not improving with sensible activity reduction, have the diagnosis checked.

Questions for your doctor

Which movement is most likely irritating the muscle? When can I resume pulling or overhead exercise? Do I need a scan or physiotherapy assessment? How can I distinguish a muscle injury from shoulder or rib pain?

Questions people ask

Can I keep exercising with a lat strain?

Gentle, pain-free movement may be reasonable, but postpone heavy pulling, lifting, and overhead work that reproduces symptoms.

How is a lat strain assessed?

A clinician usually reviews the injury, checks tenderness and shoulder movement, and compares strength with the other side; further testing depends on the findings.
