Short answer

Laser treatment may brighten selected areas of uneven pigmentation, but identifying the cause and protecting the skin from light are essential to reduce worsening or recurrence.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First step
Identify the cause of the pigmentation before choosing a laser.
Main risk
Irritation can lead to darker or lighter patches, especially in some skin tones.
Protection
Sun avoidance and consistent broad-spectrum protection support the result.

What brightening treatment targets

Dark patches can result from melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after acne or injury, sun exposure, medicines, or another skin condition. A laser may break up or remove pigment in selected layers, but it does not correct every cause. Melasma in particular can return or become more noticeable after irritation or heat.

Skin tone, pigment depth, recent tanning, and the treatment area affect the risk of prolonged redness or darker or lighter patches. A clinician may recommend a topical routine before or after laser, such as a carefully selected brightening ingredient. The goal should be more even tone while preserving the skin barrier, not changing your natural skin colour.

Preparing safely

Ask for the cause of the pigmentation to be assessed before treatment. Mention pregnancy, hormonal medicines, acne, eczema, recent sun exposure, cold sores, previous pigment changes, and all skincare products. Avoid tanning and follow the prescribed plan; daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade, and physical protection help limit re-darkening.

Cysteamine or kojic acid may be discussed for some pigment concerns, but suitability depends on the diagnosis and skin sensitivity. Pause irritating products only as directed. After laser, use gentle cleansing and moisturising, avoid picking or scrubbing, and report worsening pigment or prolonged inflammation.

When to seek medical review

Arrange prompt assessment for a new dark patch that changes quickly, bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or has an irregular appearance. After treatment, seek care for blistering, severe pain, spreading swelling, pus, fever, or pigment change that is worsening. Cosmetic brightening should not delay evaluation of a suspicious lesion.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what is causing the uneven tone, whether laser is appropriate for your skin type, how heat and pigment changes will be managed, and what non-laser options may help. Ask about preparation, aftercare, sun protection, signs of infection, and the plan if pigmentation returns.

Questions people ask

Can laser treatment brighten all uneven skin tone?

No. Its usefulness depends on the cause, pigment depth, skin tone, and risk of post-treatment colour change.

Can pigmentation come back after laser?

Yes. Ongoing sun exposure, hormones, inflammation, or the original condition can cause pigment to return.
