What should you know about laser treatment for port wine birthmarks?

A port wine birthmark, also called a capillary malformation, is made of widened small blood vessels. A vascular laser delivers light absorbed by blood within those vessels. The treated vessels are heated while the surrounding skin is protected as much as possible. The mark may look darker, swollen, or bruised before it settles.

Colour, thickness, depth, body site, and age at treatment influence the response. Facial or eyelid-area marks may need a broader assessment, particularly if there are concerns about the eye or nearby structures. Laser does not change the underlying tendency for the birthmark to remain visible, so follow-up matters.

A specialist should examine the birthmark and ask about previous treatment, medicines, cold sores, scarring, tanning, and pigment changes. Pulsed dye laser treatment is commonly considered for vascular colour, with protective eyewear used when appropriate. Keep the area protected from sun and follow cooling, cleansing, and moisturising instructions after each session.

Do not scratch blisters or crusts if they appear. Contact the clinic if the area becomes increasingly painful, develops spreading redness, or does not heal as expected. Children and adults can have different practical needs, including comfort and appointment planning.

Seek prompt review if the birthmark changes rapidly, becomes painful, bleeds, ulcerates, or develops a new lump. Urgent attention is needed for eye pain, vision change, severe facial swelling, or signs of infection such as fever and spreading redness. A new change should be assessed rather than treated as a routine cosmetic concern.
