What should you know about laser treatment for dark underarms?

Dark underarms may follow shaving, friction, deodorant irritation, or inflammation in the skin fold. Intertrigo can cause soreness, redness, moisture, and later colour change. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can remain after a rash settles. Hair shadow may also make the area look darker even when the skin pigment is unchanged.

Laser hair removal may reduce the appearance of hair shadow, while laser toning or another pigment-focused approach may be considered for selected cases. These are different goals. A clinician should decide whether the skin barrier is calm enough for treatment and whether a topical option or chemical peel is more suitable.

Have the underarms examined if there is itch, burning, scale, odour, tenderness, or a moist rash. Stop any product that clearly stings and avoid aggressive scrubbing or bleaching mixtures. Tell the clinician about recent deodorants, shaving habits, medicines, pregnancy, tanning, and a history of dark marks after irritation.

Follow instructions about shaving, deodorant, cleansing, and moisturising around the appointment. Temporary redness, warmth, swelling, sensitivity, or pigment change can occur. Keep the folds dry, wear loose clothing, and do not apply unapproved products while the treated skin settles.

Seek medical review for rapidly worsening darkening, thick or velvety skin in several body folds, persistent itch, pain, cracking, or a rash that spreads. Contact the treatment provider for blistering, severe pain, pus, marked swelling, or colour change that keeps worsening after treatment.
