Laser Treatment for Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratosis is a rough or scaly change caused by accumulated ultraviolet exposure. A laser delivers controlled energy to selected skin and may be considered when a clinician wants to treat a visible area or improve surface texture. It is not a substitute for examining a thick, tender, bleeding, rapidly changing, or uncertain lesion. A biopsy or another treatment may be needed when the appearance raises concern for squamous cell carcinoma.

Arrange a skin examination before booking a procedure. Tell the clinician about prior skin cancers, medicines that increase light sensitivity, a history of cold sores, recent tanning, and any tendency to develop darker marks after inflammation.
