Tinea versicolor is caused by an overgrowth of yeast that normally lives on the skin. It can produce lighter, darker, or pinkish patches with fine scale, often on the chest, back, shoulders, or neck. The condition can be more noticeable after tanning because affected skin may not change colour in the same way as surrounding skin.

Laser does not replace treatment aimed at the yeast. After the infection is controlled, the skin may still look uneven for a while as its pigment production normalises. A rash, scaling, dark patches, or white patches can have other causes, so diagnosis matters before choosing a procedure.

A clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment, medicated shampoo treatment, or oral antifungal treatment depending on the extent, location, recurrence, and your health. Use the prescribed product for the full advised course and apply it to the areas specified, even if the scale improves quickly. Keep skin cool and dry when possible, and avoid sharing towels or clothing.
