Laser therapy for cellulite: what to know

Cellulite is a common skin texture pattern caused by the interaction of fat, connective tissue and skin. Energy-based treatment may warm deeper tissue, encourage collagen remodeling or alter the way tethered areas look. The goal is usually a smoother appearance rather than a change in overall body weight.

Suitability depends on the location, skin laxity, depth of dimpling, medical history and the treatment device. Ask for an examination while standing and moving, because dimpling can change with position. Tell the practitioner about implants, skin disease, poor wound healing, medicines and prior procedures. Wear comfortable clothing afterward and attend review so changes in texture, swelling or firmness can be assessed.

Contact the clinic if swelling, redness, numbness, bruising or pain is worsening or lasts longer than expected. Seek prompt assessment for burns, blisters, spreading warmth, pus or fever. Sudden one-sided swelling, severe pain or a new firm lump should not be assumed to be cellulite and needs medical evaluation.
