What should you know about laser resurfacing for stretch marks?

Stretch marks form when deeper skin layers stretch and collagen and elastin fibres change. A laser creates controlled heating or microscopic treatment zones in the skin. During healing, the skin may produce and reorganise collagen, which can gradually make a mark look smoother or closer in colour to nearby skin. Newer red or purple marks and older pale marks can respond differently, so an examination matters before choosing a device. Fractional approaches treat small columns of skin while leaving surrounding tissue available for healing. Some people need a course of sessions, with time between visits for redness, swelling, or peeling to settle. Improvement is usually gradual and varies by mark and skin tone. Laser skin resurfacing is a broader treatment category; a clinician may discuss a CO2 laser or a thulium laser when either fits your goals and skin assessment.

Choose a qualified medical practitioner who routinely treats your skin tone and the body area involved. Share your medical history, medicines, tendency to form thick scars, history of cold sores, recent tanning, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any products that irritate your skin. Follow instructions about sun protection before and after treatment; recently tanned skin may have a higher risk of pigment changes. Afterward, use only the cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen recommended for healing skin, and do not pick peeling areas. Avoid heat, friction, swimming, and active skincare until your clinician says they are appropriate. Ask when makeup, exercise, shaving, and hair removal can resume. A chemical peel is another resurfacing option, but it is not interchangeable with laser treatment and has its own risks and recovery.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain, warmth, swelling, or redness is worsening rather than settling, or if you notice pus, spreading redness, fever, blistering, or an open area that is not healing. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or other signs of a severe allergic reaction. New marked darkening or lightening can appear after inflammation; report it so the clinician can assess the skin and adjust aftercare. Do not start another peel, laser, retinoid, or exfoliating product on the area while it is healing without professional advice.

Ask which type of stretch mark you have, what change is realistic for its colour and texture, and why a particular laser is being recommended. Clarify the expected recovery, pigment-change risk for your skin tone, number and spacing of sessions, aftercare products, alternatives, and what symptoms should trigger a call. Ask whether photographs, a test spot, or postponement is appropriate if the area is tanned, irritated, infected, or prone to abnormal scarring.
