What should you know about laser treatment for sun spots?

Sun spots are flat areas of increased pigment often associated with accumulated ultraviolet exposure. They may contribute to dark patches or an uneven skin tone, but not every dark mark is a sun spot. A changing, bleeding, crusting, or unusual lesion should be assessed before it is treated for appearance.

Laser and light procedures can target pigment in selected lesions. Options may include IPL Photofacial or Picosecond Laser Treatment; Chemical Peel and Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal) work differently. The choice depends on the diagnosis, location, skin tone, history of tanning, and risk of temporary or lasting pigment change.

Tell the clinician about recent sun exposure, previous pigment changes, medicines, pregnancy, active eczema, cold sores, and any tendency to form raised scars. Bring up every spot that has changed. Ask whether a test area, photography, or follow-up examination is appropriate.

Following treatment, redness, swelling, tenderness, darkening, lightening, or surface crusting may occur. Follow wound-care instructions, do not pick or scrub, and protect the area from sunlight. New exposure can encourage pigment to return, so keep using the recommended protection after the skin has healed.

Call the treating clinic if pain increases, swelling becomes marked, blisters or open skin develop, or redness spreads. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, eye pain, or vision changes. Arrange medical assessment for a spot that changes quickly, bleeds, repeatedly crusts, or does not heal.

Ask how the spot was identified, why the proposed device fits your skin, what alternatives exist, what colour changes can occur, how the area will be protected afterward, and how a suspicious or recurrent mark will be reviewed.
