What should you know about laser for atrophic scars?

Atrophic scars are depressions caused by reduced or tethered support beneath the skin. They can follow acne, chickenpox, or other inflammation. Fractional laser creates controlled treatment zones that encourage remodeling in the treated skin; it does not fill every depression in the same way.

Rolling, boxcar, and narrow ice-pick scars respond differently. Colour changes after inflammation, active breakouts, raised scars, and uneven texture may need separate treatment plans. Improvement is usually assessed over time as the skin settles and remodels.

Choose a dermatologist or qualified laser clinician who regularly treats your skin tone and scar pattern. Ask for a plan that addresses active acne first and includes sun protection, gentle cleansing, and clear aftercare. Alternatives may include microneedling, subcision, or carefully selected dermal fillers; each targets a different part of the scar.

Avoid picking active spots and tell the clinician about eczema, cold sores, medicines, recent tanning, and any tendency to develop dark marks. Do not schedule treatment over irritated or infected skin.

Contact the clinic if pain, swelling, blistering, crusting, or redness is worsening instead of settling, or if drainage develops. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or a widespread allergic reaction. New or changing lesions should be examined before cosmetic treatment.
