What should you know about laryngitis and a wet cough?

Laryngitis mainly affects the voice box, but it can occur during a respiratory infection that also produces mucus in the nose, throat or chest. Post-nasal mucus can trigger coughing, while a Common Cold may cause both a hoarse voice and a chesty cough. Reflux can also irritate the throat and prompt repeated coughing, although it does not usually create mucus from the lungs.

Pay attention to the character of the cough, not just its presence. Note whether mucus is clear or coloured, whether you feel breathless, and whether fever, chest pain or wheezing accompanies it. A wet cough does not by itself show that antibiotics are needed.

Drink regularly to keep throat secretions easier to clear, rest your voice, and avoid smoke or strong fragrances. Humid air may soothe irritation. Coughing mucus out is generally more useful than repeatedly suppressing the urge, but seek advice before using a cough medicine, especially for a child, during pregnancy or with other medicines. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, severe chest pain, confusion, coughing blood or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange medical advice if the cough is worsening, you feel very unwell, fever persists, or breathlessness develops. A Sore Throat that prevents swallowing also needs prompt assessment.
