What should you know about laryngitis types?

Acute laryngitis starts suddenly and often follows a viral upper-respiratory illness such as a Common Cold. The voice may become rough, weak or absent, with throat irritation and a dry cough. Chronic laryngitis continues or returns because the voice box remains irritated. Possible triggers include repeated loud speaking, smoking or second-hand smoke, dusty air, allergies, and Acid Reflux reaching the throat.

A symptom pattern can overlap between types, so the label is not always clear from the voice alone. Hoarse Voice that persists needs assessment, particularly when there is pain, swallowing difficulty or a breathing change.

Rest your voice by speaking gently and only when needed; whispering can also strain the voice. Drink fluids, use a humidifier if the air is dry, and avoid smoke, vaping, alcohol and other irritants. Do not clear your throat repeatedly, because this can add friction around the vocal folds. Treating a linked trigger, such as reflux symptoms, may reduce repeated episodes. Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, or rapidly worsening throat swelling. Arrange a clinical review for a voice change that does not settle, repeated episodes, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss or a neck lump.
