Signs of laryngitis

Laryngitis affects the larynx and vocal cords, so the clearest sign is a change in voice. It may sound rough, breathy, low, or fade during conversation. Some people temporarily lose their voice. Other signs include a scratchy or dry throat, a tickling cough, frequent throat clearing, and discomfort with prolonged talking. A cold can bring a runny or blocked nose, while reflux may cause hoarseness or throat clearing without a typical burning sensation. The presence of one sign does not confirm a single cause; the full pattern and its progress are more useful.

Reduce speaking and use a relaxed, quiet voice when communication is necessary. Avoid whispering, shouting, singing, smoke, and dusty or strongly scented air. Drink fluids regularly and take breaks from conversations. Note when the voice change began, whether it follows a cold, and whether meals or lying down make it worse. This information can help a clinician consider infection, irritation, voice strain, or reflux. Do not repeatedly force the voice to check whether it has recovered.

Get urgent help if breathing becomes difficult or noisy, swallowing liquids is impossible, drooling develops, or throat swelling worsens quickly. Arrange a GP assessment if hoarseness persists, returns often, affects your ability to work, or occurs with a neck lump, blood in coughed mucus, unexplained weight loss, or severe pain. Children with breathing problems need prompt assessment. A clinician can decide whether the larynx needs closer examination.
