Laryngitis and phlegm

A cold can increase nasal mucus that drains into the throat, while irritated throat tissues can create a sticky sensation and encourage throat clearing. Acid reflux may also leave a need to clear the throat without a chest infection. Phlegm colour alone cannot reliably identify the cause. Laryngitis mainly affects the voice box, so prominent chest symptoms may point to a separate respiratory problem.

Drink water regularly, breathe moist air and swallow or sip water instead of repeatedly clearing your throat. Saline nasal rinsing may help when mucus is coming from the nose, provided the product is used as directed. Avoid smoke, vaping and other irritants. A pharmacist can discuss an appropriate product if congestion or cough is troublesome, but check ingredients before combining remedies. Antibiotics are not automatically useful for phlegm or laryngitis.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, blue lips, chest pain, coughing blood, inability to swallow fluids or rapidly worsening swelling. Arrange a GP Consultation if phlegm persists, becomes associated with fever or breathlessness, has blood in it, or comes with hoarseness that does not improve. Assessment can separate throat irritation from a chest or nasal condition.

Ask whether the mucus is more consistent with nasal drainage, reflux, laryngitis or a chest illness, and whether any medicine is suitable with your existing treatment. Note its duration, colour, amount, associated cough, breathing symptoms and exposure to smoke.
