Laryngitis: understanding its length of time

Laryngitis commonly improves over several days, although a raspy voice may take longer to return. The duration depends on what inflamed the voice box: a cold, forceful or prolonged speaking, inhaled irritants, or Acid Reflux can all produce similar symptoms.

The vocal cords swell and cannot meet and vibrate as smoothly, making speech hoarse or breathy. A Common Cold can bring Sore Throat and cough alongside the voice change. Improvement should be gradual; a voice that is worsening, repeatedly lost, or unchanged over time needs a closer look.

Use your voice sparingly, pause between necessary conversations, and avoid shouting. Sip water regularly, avoid tobacco smoke, and keep away from dusty or strongly scented air. Gentle steam from a warm shower may feel soothing, but avoid hot water burns. Treating reflux triggers can help when symptoms are worse after meals or when lying down.

Book a GP Consultation if the voice change does not steadily improve, recurs without a cold, or makes normal communication difficult. Get urgent medical help for noisy or difficult breathing, trouble swallowing saliva or liquids, blue lips, or sudden swelling of the throat. Do not wait for voice loss to resolve if these signs occur.

Tell your clinician when the change began, whether it followed shouting or illness, and whether you have heartburn, cough, fever, or Sore Throat. Ask how long observation is reasonable and whether another cause of Hoarse Voice should be checked.
