How long does laryngitis last?

Laryngitis often settles within about a week, but hoarseness can linger while the voice box recovers. A viral illness such as a Common Cold may trigger it, while voice strain, smoke, dry air, or Acid Reflux can keep the vocal cords irritated.

A rough voice, throat irritation, cough, or difficulty speaking may improve at different speeds. Hoarse Voice can remain after other cold symptoms have eased because inflamed vocal cords need time to vibrate normally. The pattern, your voice use, and any reflux symptoms help a clinician judge the cause.

Rest your voice by speaking less and using a comfortable volume; whispering can also strain the voice. Drink fluids, avoid smoking and smoky rooms, and add moisture to dry indoor air. Do not repeatedly clear your throat. If reflux seems relevant, avoid lying down soon after eating and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician.

Arrange a GP Consultation if hoarseness is not improving, keeps returning, or interferes with work or eating. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly increasing throat swelling, or severe weakness. A persistent voice change deserves assessment even when pain is mild.

Ask what may be irritating your voice box, whether reflux or an infection fits the pattern, and how long to monitor the change. Mention smoking or vaping, heavy voice use, medicines, and any Sore Throat or breathing difficulty.
