Laryngitis inflammation explained

The larynx connects the throat with the windpipe and protects the airway during swallowing. Its vocal cords normally open for breathing and vibrate for speech. When their lining becomes swollen, vibration changes and the voice may sound rough, breathy, weak, or disappear. A Common Cold can inflame the area; repeated loud speaking, smoke, dry air, allergies, or Acid Reflux may prolong irritation. Hoarse Voice is the most recognisable change, and Sore Throat may accompany it.

Use your voice sparingly and avoid whispering, shouting, singing, and repeated throat clearing. Drink water regularly and choose soothing warm or cool fluids according to comfort. Keep away from tobacco smoke and dusty or strongly scented air. If reflux symptoms are present, mention them during an assessment and avoid lying down soon after meals. Do not start antibiotics simply because the voice is hoarse; treatment depends on the underlying cause.

Get urgent help if swelling is linked with difficulty breathing, high-pitched or noisy breathing, drooling, or inability to swallow. Book a GP Consultation when inflammation is persistent, repeatedly returns, or causes ongoing voice limitation. Assessment is also sensible when voice change occurs without a clear cold or after exposure to an irritant.

Ask whether the inflammation fits a viral illness, reflux, or another cause; what voice use is safe; and whether persistent hoarseness needs examination of the larynx.
