Laryngitis in infants: treatment and safety

An infant may have a weak or hoarse cry, cough, congestion, or a Sore Throat-like illness. Viral infections, including a Common Cold, are frequent triggers, but a clinician must consider the child's age, breathing, feeding, and general behaviour. Infants cannot describe discomfort, so changes such as tiring during feeds, fewer wet nappies, unusual sleepiness, or a different cry deserve attention. Acid Reflux can also irritate the throat and voice box in some babies.

Offer breastfeeds or formula in the usual way, with smaller and more frequent feeds if congestion makes feeding tiring. Keep the infant upright while awake and comfort them calmly. Use saline drops and gentle nasal clearing if a blocked nose interferes with feeding. Keep the room free from smoke, vapour products, and strong fragrances. Do not give cough or cold medicines, honey, or any other treatment to an infant unless a healthcare professional has advised it. Avoid steam near the baby because hot water can cause burns.

Seek emergency care for struggling or fast breathing, noisy breathing at rest, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, drooling, inability to swallow, or marked difficulty feeding. Contact a clinician promptly if the infant is less alert, has noticeably fewer wet nappies, or the Hoarse Voice is worsening.
