Laryngitis and green mucus: what should you know?

Mucus can become yellow or green as immune cells and trapped material collect during a cold or another airway irritation. Laryngitis mainly affects the voice box, while mucus may come from the nose, sinuses or lower airways. Colour alone cannot identify the cause or tell you whether an infection is bacterial. Acid reflux, smoke and dehydration may worsen throat irritation without producing the same illness.

Drink fluids often, rest your voice, and avoid smoking or smoky air. Saline nasal rinsing may help if mucus is draining from the nose, provided you use safe prepared water as directed. Cover coughs, wash hands and avoid sharing drinks if you have cold symptoms. Do not start leftover antibiotics; a clinician should decide whether medication is appropriate after considering the whole picture.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, blue lips, inability to swallow fluids or rapidly worsening swelling. Contact a clinician if you feel markedly unwell, develop persistent fever, cough up blood, become dehydrated, or symptoms keep worsening rather than easing. A GP assessment can distinguish throat irritation from a chest or sinus problem.

Ask where the mucus is likely coming from, whether your lungs or sinuses need examination, and which treatments are suitable for you. Tell the clinician about breathlessness, fever, chest symptoms, reflux, smoking and how long the voice change has lasted.
