Laryngitis every time you get a cold

A cold can inflame the lining around the larynx, where the vocal cords vibrate. Coughing, throat clearing, mouth breathing and nasal drainage can keep irritating this area, causing a rough, weak or absent voice. Repeated episodes do not by themselves identify a serious cause. Reflux, allergy symptoms, smoke exposure and heavy voice use can add irritation between infections. Notice whether your voice returns fully between colds, whether symptoms begin with nasal congestion or fever, and whether swallowing or breathing becomes difficult. A voice that stays changed after the cold has settled deserves a clinician's review.

Rest your voice by speaking briefly and softly; avoid whispering, shouting and singing because these can also strain the vocal cords. Sip water regularly, use humidified air if it feels soothing, and avoid smoke or other inhaled irritants. Treating nasal blockage can reduce mouth breathing and throat dryness. Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, or rapidly increasing swelling. Arrange a routine appointment if hoarseness lasts beyond the cold, keeps recurring, includes coughing blood, or is accompanied by unexplained weight loss, neck swelling or significant pain. A clinician may examine your throat, review medicines and reflux symptoms, and decide whether the vocal cords need specialist assessment.

Ask whether your pattern suggests post-viral irritation, reflux or another trigger; whether any medicine could be drying your throat; and how long you should wait for your voice to recover before review.
