Laryngitis and bloody mucus: what should you do?

Bloody mucus with laryngitis should be assessed, especially when bleeding recurs, increases, or comes with breathing difficulty. A small streak can follow irritation from forceful coughing, throat clearing, a dry throat, or a nosebleed draining backwards, but blood should not be dismissed without considering its source.

Inflamed tissues in the nose, throat, or voice box can bleed more easily when irritated. A [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/) may cause coughing and dryness, while [Hoarse Voice](/symptoms/hoarse-voice/) reflects irritation around the vocal cords. [Sore Throat](/symptoms/sore-throat/) can make repeated clearing more likely. Blood that is dark, clotted, mixed throughout mucus, or clearly coughed up from the chest needs a clinician's assessment rather than a guess about laryngitis.

Note the colour and amount, whether it appeared after coughing or nose blowing, and whether it has happened before. Rest your voice, drink fluids, and avoid smoke, vaping, and forceful throat clearing. Do not take medicines intended to thin blood or stop bleeding without professional advice. If you use blood-thinning medication, have a bleeding condition, or recently had an airway procedure, tell the clinician promptly.

Seek emergency help for more than a trace of blood, ongoing bleeding, breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, faintness, choking, or inability to swallow. Ask whether the blood seems to come from your nose, throat, voice box, or chest; whether an examination is needed; and which medicines to pause or continue. Mention smoking, reflux symptoms, recent infection, coughing force, and any blood-thinning treatment.
