Laryngitis and pregnancy: what to know

Laryngitis is inflammation around the voice box, causing a rough, weak, or missing voice. A Common Cold can irritate the upper airway, while Acid Reflux may allow stomach contents to reach the throat and voice box. Pregnancy-related changes can make reflux more troublesome. A Hoarse Voice and Sore Throat may occur together, but neither symptom by itself identifies the cause.

Rest your voice by speaking gently and avoiding shouting or whispering. Sip fluids regularly, use moist air if it feels soothing, and avoid smoke and other throat irritants. Smaller meals and remaining upright after eating may reduce reflux-related irritation. Ask a pharmacist, midwife, or clinician to check any lozenge, herbal product, pain medicine, or reflux treatment for pregnancy suitability before taking it.

Arrange a GP Consultation if your voice is worsening, does not begin to improve, keeps returning, or comes with troublesome reflux. Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, marked swelling, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. Fever with significant weakness also deserves prompt advice during pregnancy.
