Laryngitis after vomiting: what to know

Retching can forcefully move the throat and irritate the larynx, while acidic stomach contents may inflame its delicate lining. This can cause a rough or weak voice, throat discomfort, coughing, or a feeling of dryness. Hoarse voice is a symptom that can accompany laryngitis; it does not by itself identify the cause.

Vomiting may also occur during an infection, and reflux can continue to irritate the throat after the episode. A sore throat or cold symptoms can provide useful context when a clinician assesses you.

Sip water or a non-acidic drink, choose soft foods when you can tolerate them, and avoid shouting, whispering, smoking, and smoky rooms. Gentle steam from a warm shower may feel soothing, but avoid burns from very hot water.

Give your voice quiet breaks and try not to clear your throat repeatedly. If reflux symptoms follow vomiting, remain upright after eating and ask a pharmacist or clinician which treatment is suitable for you. Do not restart prescription medicines or take anti-sickness treatment without checking the label or getting advice.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe chest or abdominal pain, vomit containing blood, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and marked dizziness.

Arrange a GP consultation if your voice is not settling, vomiting keeps returning, swallowing remains painful, or you develop fever or worsening throat symptoms. A clinician can examine your throat, ask about reflux and medicines, and decide whether further assessment is needed.
