What should you know about large moles?

Moles are collections of pigment-producing cells and can be flat, raised, smooth or hairy. Some are present from childhood and others appear later. A larger size does not diagnose skin cancer, yet a mole that looks different from your other moles or evolves over time deserves a professional skin examination.

A dermatologist reviews symmetry, border, colour, diameter, surface and change, while also considering your personal and family history. If the appearance is uncertain, a biopsy can provide a tissue diagnosis. Do not rely on a photograph, online image or self-check to decide whether a mole is harmless.

Take a clear photograph beside a familiar object for scale and note when you first noticed the mole or any change. Protect it from repeated friction and sun exposure, and do not shave, burn or tie it off at home. A clinician can explain whether monitoring, biopsy or removal makes sense.

Surgical excision removes the mole with a planned margin and allows the tissue to be examined. Mole removal may be considered for symptoms, repeated irritation, appearance or diagnostic uncertainty. The method depends on the mole’s depth, site and the result needed from the tissue examination.

Book a prompt dermatology review if a mole develops uneven colouring, an irregular edge, rapid growth, persistent itching, pain, bleeding, crusting or an open sore. Seek faster advice for a new dark lesion that is changing quickly or a mole with a nearby lump. These signs call for assessment; they do not prove a diagnosis.

Ask whether the mole should be photographed, monitored, biopsied or removed, whether the procedure will leave a scar, how the wound will be closed, and when the tissue result will be available. Mention any previous atypical moles and medicines that affect bleeding or healing.
