What should you know about a large lung nodule?

Short answer
A large lung nodule is an imaging finding, not a diagnosis, and needs review of its appearance, growth and clinical context.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Meaning
- A nodule is a spot seen on imaging and does not by itself identify cancer.
- Helpful record
- Previous chest images can help show whether the finding has changed.
A nodule is a finding, not a final diagnosis
A large lung nodule is an imaging finding, not a diagnosis, and needs review of its appearance, growth and clinical context. Some nodules result from infection, inflammation or scarring; others require testing to determine whether cancer is present.
How clinicians interpret a lung nodule
The report may describe the nodule's exact position, edges, density and relationship to nearby structures. Comparison with older images can show whether it is stable or changing. Smoking history, previous cancer, infections, immune conditions and symptoms also influence the plan. Size matters, but it is considered alongside the whole scan rather than used alone to label the nodule. A lung nodule may cause no symptoms, so feeling well does not replace follow-up.
The usual evaluation pathway
Ask the clinician who arranged the scan to explain the report and next step. A CT scan can provide detailed views of the nodule and surrounding lung. Depending on its features and your history, the team may recommend interval imaging, specialist review or a biopsy to examine cells or tissue. Keep previous scan reports available and tell the team about smoking, occupational exposures, infections, medicines and any earlier cancer diagnosis. Follow the agreed plan even when the nodule is not causing symptoms.
When symptoms need urgent help
Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, chest pain, coughing up blood, fainting, or a sudden major change in breathing. Contact your clinical team promptly if you develop a persistent worsening cough, fever, or unexplained decline while awaiting assessment. These symptoms need attention because of their severity; they cannot by themselves establish what the nodule represents.
Questions about the scan and plan
Ask what the nodule looks like, whether earlier images are available for comparison, and whether a CT scan or biopsy is recommended. Ask what the possible benefits and drawbacks of each option are, how results will be communicated, and what symptoms should prompt earlier contact.
Questions people ask
Does a large lung nodule mean lung cancer?
Not necessarily. Infection, inflammation, scar tissue and other causes can produce lung nodules, while some need testing to assess for cancer.
Why might a biopsy be suggested?
A biopsy can provide cells or tissue for laboratory examination when scans and clinical history cannot answer the question adequately.
