What should you know about a large lump under the skin on the face?

A facial lump may be a blocked follicle, acne-related inflammation, cyst, boil, fatty growth, or another skin or soft-tissue lesion. A basal cell carcinoma can appear as a changing spot, sore, or growth, particularly on sun-exposed facial skin, but a lump cannot be identified reliably from a description alone. Note whether it is deep or surface-based, mobile or fixed, tender or painless, and whether the overlying skin is red, scaly, crusted, or bleeding. The position matters too: a lump near the eye, nose, mouth, or ear may need more careful examination.

Do not pop, needle, squeeze, or apply harsh products to the area. Wash gently, avoid picking, and protect the skin from friction and sun exposure. Photograph the lump in good light and record when it started, whether it is growing, and any pain, drainage, or skin change. Arrange a clinician or dermatology appointment for a persistent, enlarging, recurrent, or unexplained facial lump. Depending on the cause, care may include observation, treatment for infection, an injection into the skin, or another procedure chosen after examination.

Seek urgent advice for a hot, rapidly enlarging, very painful lump, fever, pus, or redness spreading across the face. Get immediate help for swelling around the eye with vision change, severe headache, marked illness, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when a lump bleeds, ulcerates, repeatedly crusts, becomes hard or fixed, or changes in a way you cannot explain.
