What should you know about a large dermatofibroma?

A dermatofibroma is a benign fibrous growth within the skin. It commonly feels firm and may look tan, brown, pink, or darker than nearby skin. Some nodules form a small inward dip when gently pinched from the sides. They can follow minor trauma or an insect bite, although the exact trigger is not always clear.

Size, colour, and texture vary, and other skin lumps can resemble a dermatofibroma. A clinician may diagnose it by examination and may recommend a biopsy or removal when the appearance is unusual or the diagnosis is uncertain.

A stable nodule that causes no symptoms may simply be monitored. Avoid cutting, freezing, or repeatedly irritating it at home. If it catches on clothing, hurts, becomes cosmetically bothersome, or cannot be confidently identified, discuss treatment with a dermatologist.

Surgical excision removes the nodule for examination and may leave a scar. The decision balances symptoms, appearance, diagnostic certainty, and the location of the lump. Ask how the wound will be closed and cared for before choosing a procedure.

Arrange prompt assessment if the nodule grows, changes colour or outline, becomes persistently painful, ulcerates, crusts, or bleeds. Also seek review if it feels fixed, develops new symptoms, or differs noticeably from your other skin lumps. These changes do not identify a diagnosis by themselves, but they should not be ignored.

Ask whether the lump has the typical features of a dermatofibroma, whether it should be photographed or monitored, and whether examination or excision would provide greater certainty. Discuss scar location, wound care, recovery, and what change should bring you back for review.
