What should you know about large dark spots on skin?

Protect exposed areas from sunlight and avoid picking, harsh scrubs, and unprescribed bleaching mixtures. Treating the trigger helps prevent new pigment, but existing colour often fades gradually rather than immediately.

After diagnosis, a clinician may discuss chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, or picosecond laser treatment. These options differ in how they affect the skin and may not suit every pigment pattern or skin tone. Treating an undiagnosed mark can delay the right care or increase irritation.

Arrange a dermatology review for a new, enlarging, irregular, multicoloured, bleeding, crusted, itchy, or painful spot. Prompt assessment is appropriate when a patch changes quickly or develops an open area. A patch that looks harmless can still need evaluation if it persists without a clear explanation.
