What should you know about large cervical ectropion?

Cervical ectropion happens when glandular cells that normally line the cervical canal sit on the outer surface of the cervix. These cells are delicate and produce mucus, so ectropion can be associated with increased vaginal discharge or bleeding after sex. Hormonal changes can make it more noticeable.

The appearance is not the same as cervical cancer, but bleeding and discharge can have several causes. A clinician may examine the cervix and recommend a cervical screening test or other checks when appropriate, particularly if symptoms are new, persistent, or changing.

If the ectropion causes no problems, treatment may not be needed. Keep track of bleeding, discharge, pain, and possible triggers such as sex. Avoid douching because it can irritate the vagina and alter its natural balance.

When symptoms continue and other causes have been excluded, a clinician may discuss treatment that seals the exposed cells. The choice depends on examination findings, pregnancy plans, screening history, and how much the symptoms affect you. Do not self-treat cervical bleeding with over-the-counter products.

Arrange medical review for bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, unusual or foul-smelling discharge, pelvic pain, or symptoms that persist. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe pain, fever, or feeling acutely unwell.
