A cafe au lait spot is a flat area of increased pigment with a fairly even colour and a clear outline. It can occur on many body areas and is often noticed in childhood. Size, number, borders, location, and whether other skin or neurological features are present help a clinician decide whether it is an isolated birthmark or part of a broader pattern.
