What should you know about large bumps on neck?

A bump may be a superficial skin lesion or a deeper lump. Folliculitis can produce tender bumps around hairs, while heat rash causes small irritated areas in warm, sweaty skin. Keratosis pilaris tends to feel rough and is usually made up of many small follicle-based bumps. Milia are firm, pale cysts close to the surface. Lichen planus can cause itchy, inflamed bumps. These are examples, not a diagnosis.

A clinician may ask when it appeared, whether it is growing, and whether shaving, friction, a new product, or an insect bite preceded it. Examination can distinguish a surface lesion from a swollen lymph node or another cause.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly rub the area. Wash gently, keep sweat and collars from irritating it, and pause shaving directly over the bump. A cool compress may calm itch or irritation; avoid applying steroid, antibiotic, or antiseptic products unless a clinician recommends them. An antihistamine may be considered for an itchy allergic-type reaction, but it will not treat every cause.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the bump persists, enlarges, returns, or feels deep. Treatment depends on the finding and may include prescribed skin medicine, drainage for a collection, or a procedure such as cryotherapy for a suitable surface lesion.

Seek prompt medical care if the neck becomes rapidly swollen, the bump is very painful or hot, redness spreads, pus is draining, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Urgent help is appropriate for trouble breathing or swallowing, marked weakness, or swelling of the lips or tongue. A hard, fixed, unexplained lump or a bump that does not settle also deserves an in-person examination.

Ask what layer of skin or tissue the bump seems to involve, whether it needs testing, which warning changes should prompt review, and whether any treatment could leave a mark on the neck.
