What Should You Know About a Large Bump After Shaving?

A large bump after shaving is often linked to an ingrown hair or an irritated hair follicle, but increasing pain, pus, spreading redness, or fever needs medical assessment. Shaving can cut hair back to a sharp tip; as the hair grows, it may curve into nearby skin and cause a raised, tender area. Friction, close shaving, and shaving against the direction of growth can make irritation more likely.

When you resume shaving, use a clean sharp razor, soften the hair with warm water, apply shaving gel, and shave in the direction the hair grows using light strokes. Avoid repeatedly passing over the same patch. If shaving repeatedly triggers large or painful bumps, ask a clinician whether a different hair-removal method, including laser hair removal, is suitable for your skin and hair type.

Arrange a medical review if the lump keeps enlarging, becomes increasingly painful or warm, drains pus, develops spreading redness, or does not begin to settle after you stop irritating it. Seek prompt care if you feel feverish or unwell, or if red streaks extend away from the area. A clinician may need to check for a deeper infection, an abscess, or a different type of skin lump.
