What should you know about lap radical hysterectomy?

Laparoscopic surgery uses a camera and instruments passed through small abdominal openings. In a radical hysterectomy, the surgeon removes the womb, cervix, nearby supporting tissue, and a small area around the upper vagina; lymph nodes may also be assessed. The ovaries may or may not be removed, depending on age, diagnosis, and treatment goals. The approach is different from a simple hysterectomy and may not suit every tumour or person. Cervical Cancer is the condition most closely associated with this operation, while other womb conditions require a separate discussion.

Before surgery, discuss fertility, ovarian function, urinary changes, bowel function, sexual health, and whether another treatment would be safer or more effective. Ask which tissues will be removed and how lymph nodes will be handled. Afterward, walking as advised helps recovery, but lifting and strenuous activity usually need to wait until the surgical team confirms they are appropriate. Keep the wounds clean and take medicines as prescribed. Bleeding Between Periods or other abnormal bleeding should be assessed rather than attributed to an operation that has not yet happened.

Contact your surgical team for fever, worsening pelvic pain, heavy or increasing vaginal bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, wound redness, wound drainage, vomiting, or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, collapse, or sudden one-sided leg swelling and pain. These symptoms need prompt assessment because they can signal infection, bleeding, urinary problems, or a blood clot.
