What should you know about laminectomy site?

The incision sits over the part of the spine where bone was removed to relieve pressure. Its length and appearance depend on the number of levels treated and whether the surgeon used a smaller or conventional approach. Bruising, tenderness, and a pulling feeling with movement can accompany early healing.

The skin closure may use stitches, staples, or adhesive. A small dressing can protect the area at first. Do not assume that a neat-looking skin wound means the deeper tissues have fully healed; the surgeon’s restrictions still matter even when discomfort is easing.

Keep the dressing and showering routine exactly as instructed. Avoid soaking the wound, applying creams without approval, or scratching scabs. Wear loose clothing that does not rub the incision, and use a mirror or trusted helper if you cannot inspect the site safely.

Change position regularly and walk in short, comfortable periods. Avoid bending, twisting, or lifting beyond the limit given by your team. At review, ask when the closure will be removed and when scar massage, bathing, driving, or physiotherapy is appropriate.

Seek prompt advice if the wound becomes more painful, red, warm, swollen, or starts draining blood or cloudy fluid. A persistent clear leak, fever, or separation of the edges also warrants contact. Emergency assessment is needed for new weakness, bladder or bowel changes, groin numbness, chest pain, or breathing trouble.
