What should you know about laminectomy laser surgery?

A laminectomy removes part of the lamina, the bony plate at the back of a vertebra, to create more room for nerves. The word laser describes one possible tool; it does not by itself define the operation or make it suitable for every spine problem. Compression may be related to spinal stenosis, a disc problem, or vertebral movement such as spondylolisthesis.

The surgeon may use a microscope, an endoscope, or conventional exposure alongside other instruments. Removing bone is different from stabilising the spine, so a separate fusion may be discussed when movement between vertebrae contributes to symptoms.

Ask which level will be treated, what tissue will be removed, and whether the plan is open, minimally invasive, or endoscopic. Provide a complete list of medicines and health conditions, and follow instructions about eating, bathing, and medicines before surgery.

Afterward, walking is usually introduced gradually. Keep the incision clean and follow the team’s lifting, bending, driving, and physiotherapy advice. Improvement in leg pain can occur before numbness or weakness changes, so track symptoms rather than judging recovery from soreness around the incision alone.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or a new fluid leak. Seek urgent care for new or worsening leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, chest pain, or trouble breathing.
