What should you know about Lamictal and Stevens-Johnson syndrome?

Lamictal is the brand name for lamotrigine. Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a serious immune-mediated reaction that can damage the skin and the moist linings of the mouth, eyes, nose, genitals, or airways. Early features may resemble an infection: fever, tiredness, sore throat, or burning eyes. A tender or rapidly spreading rash, dusky patches, blisters, peeling skin, or raw sores are especially concerning. A mild-looking rash cannot be safely classified at home.

Not every rash in someone taking Lamictal is Stevens-Johnson syndrome; rashes have many possible causes. A clinician must consider the timing, appearance, other medicines, and examination findings.

Contact the prescriber or an urgent medical service immediately if a new rash appears while taking Lamictal. Do not take another dose until a clinician who knows your treatment advises you, and do not restart it on your own. Take the medicine package, a list of every medicine and supplement, and the date the rash began. Avoid applying new creams or taking leftover medicines before assessment, since they can alter the appearance or complicate the picture.

Go to an emergency department now for facial swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, eye pain, vision changes, widespread blistering, skin peeling, severe skin pain, faintness, or sores in the mouth or genital area. These signs can indicate involvement beyond a simple surface rash and need hospital assessment. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or very unwell.

Ask whether Lamictal should be stopped, which symptoms require emergency review, and what alternative treatment may be appropriate. Ask how the reaction will be recorded in your medical record and whether related medicines should be avoided in the future.
