Short answer

Lamellar ichthyosis is an inherited skin-barrier disorder that causes widespread dryness and large scales, requiring consistent moisturising and dermatology follow-up.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
An inherited skin-barrier disorder
Main features
Widespread dryness, tightness, and plate-like scaling
Core care
Regular emollient use and dermatology follow-up

What lamellar ichthyosis can look like

Lamellar ichthyosis affects how the outer layer of skin forms and sheds. People may develop broad, plate-like scales over much of the body, with tightness, cracking, or ongoing itch. The face, scalp, palms, and soles can be affected in different ways. Heat intolerance or reduced sweating may occur when thick scale interferes with cooling.

The condition is usually long-term and is not caused by poor hygiene. Skin-barrier changes can make irritation and infection easier, while scale around the eyes or ears may need specialist care. Dry Skin and Scaly Skin describe features, but they do not by themselves establish this diagnosis.

Daily skin care

Use the cleanser, bathing routine, and moisturiser recommended by your dermatologist. Emollient Therapy helps hold water in the outer skin layer; applying it soon after bathing can support hydration. Some people are prescribed products that soften or loosen scale, but strong acids, scrubbing, or herbal remedies can irritate and should be discussed first.

Keep rooms and clothing comfortable, drink regularly, and plan cooling breaks in hot weather. Avoid picking scales or pulling tightly attached skin. Check cracks in the hands, feet, and folds, and tell your clinician if care becomes difficult, sleep is disrupted, or daily activities are limited.

When to seek medical care

Arrange prompt review for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, rapidly worsening pain, or cracks that are not healing. Seek urgent help if overheating is accompanied by confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or inability to cool down. New eye irritation, reduced hearing, or significant swelling also deserves specialist assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Which moisturiser and scale-softening ingredients suit my skin? How often should I bathe and apply treatment? How can I manage heat and sweating problems? Should relatives or children receive genetic counselling, and which symptoms suggest infection or overheating?

Questions people ask

Is lamellar ichthyosis contagious?

No. It results from inherited skin-barrier changes and does not spread through touch.

Can moisturiser cure lamellar ichthyosis?

Moisturising cannot remove the underlying inherited condition, but regular emollient care can soften scale, reduce cracking, and support the skin barrier.
