Lactose intolerance foods to avoid

Short answer
Foods to limit with lactose intolerance are those containing enough milk sugar to trigger your individual symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Where lactose may be found
Milk, cream, ice cream and many soft cheeses contain lactose. It can also appear in custards, milk chocolate, creamy sauces, instant foods and baked products. Some people tolerate yoghurt or aged hard cheese better because processing changes the amount or digestion of lactose. A milk-free product is not automatically suitable: check for other ingredients and make sure it provides useful nutrients.
Choose and test foods thoughtfully
Read ingredient labels for milk, milk powder, whey, cream and other dairy terms. Keep a diary so you can identify a portion that is manageable instead of excluding every dairy food. Try lactose-free milk or a nutritionally fortified alternative, and include other calcium sources in meals. If symptoms remain unclear, ask about Food Intolerance Testing or Nutrition Counselling. Avoid changing several food groups at once, because that makes triggers harder to identify.
When food avoidance is not enough
See a clinician if symptoms continue despite avoiding suspected foods, interfere with daily life, or involve weight loss, blood in stool, persistent vomiting or severe Abdominal Pain. Fever or chills are not usual lactose-intolerance symptoms and need assessment. Get urgent help for severe dehydration or rapidly worsening illness.
Questions to bring
Ask which foods you truly need to limit, how to maintain calcium and vitamin D intake, and whether Lactose Intolerance explains your symptoms. Show your food diary and ask how to reintroduce foods safely.

Questions people ask
Do I have to avoid cheese?
Not necessarily. Tolerance varies, and some people manage aged hard cheese or small portions without symptoms.
Are lactose-free foods dairy-free?
No. They may still contain milk proteins, so they are different from products made without dairy.
