What should you know about lactose intolerance after gastroenteritis?

Short answer

After gastroenteritis, temporary lactose intolerance can occur because the infected intestine may need time to restore normal lactase activity.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
Temporary reduction in lactase after intestinal irritation
Common triggers
Milk and other lactose-containing foods
Recovery plan
Hydration, tolerable food and gradual reintroduction

Why symptoms may continue

Gastroenteritis can irritate the lining of the small intestine. If lactase production falls during recovery, lactose may be poorly digested and then fermented in the colon. Milk or other dairy may trigger cramps, bloating, rumbling or diarrhoea even after the infection itself has settled.

This pattern may improve as the intestinal lining recovers. Ongoing diarrhoea, abdominal pain or weight loss can have other causes, including persistent infection or a separate digestive condition, so the timing and trajectory matter.

Supporting recovery

Replace fluids and salts as advised, eat tolerable foods, and consider reducing lactose briefly if it clearly worsens symptoms. Reintroduce small portions gradually when bowel movements are settling rather than avoiding dairy indefinitely. Lactose-free products may be useful during this period.

Do not use a restrictive diet as a substitute for assessment if symptoms are severe or prolonged. Nutrition Counselling can help protect energy and nutrient intake. If the pattern does not improve, a clinician may discuss Food Intolerance Testing or another evaluation.

When to contact a clinician

Seek urgent care for severe dehydration, confusion, faintness, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange review if diarrhoea continues, symptoms are worsening, fever returns, or dairy-related symptoms persist after the infection has otherwise resolved.

What to ask

Does my recovery pattern suggest temporary lactose intolerance? How should I replace fluids and reintroduce dairy? Do I need testing for infection or another cause? Which signs would require urgent assessment?

Questions people ask

Will this always be permanent?

No. Lactose digestion may improve as the intestinal lining recovers, although persistent symptoms need review.

When can I try dairy again?

When acute bowel symptoms are settling, try small portions gradually unless a clinician advises otherwise.
