Lactic and Mandelic Acid: What to Know

Short answer

Lactic and mandelic acid both exfoliate skin, but the right choice depends on your concern, formulation, and skin tolerance.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Both acids do
Loosen some surface skin cells
Key variables
Formula, pH, contact time, and tolerance
Safer start
Introduce one acid at a time

How the two acids differ

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that helps loosen surface cells and can support smoother, more hydrated-feeling skin. Mandelic acid is another alpha hydroxy acid with a larger molecular structure, so some people find a suitable mandelic formulation easier to tolerate. Tolerance still depends on concentration, pH, contact time, and the rest of the formula.

Neither ingredient is automatically gentle for every person. Stinging, prolonged redness, scaling, or darkening after irritation means the routine needs to be changed, not intensified.

Choosing and introducing one

Choose one acid first and follow the product directions. Test a small area, apply to clean and completely dry intact skin, and moisturise afterwards. Avoid combining both acids at the start, and be cautious with retinoids, scrubs, benzoyl peroxide, or recently waxed skin. Use sun protection because exfoliated skin can be more reactive to sunlight.

For a controlled in-clinic approach, a Chemical Peel may use a selected acid blend. Read about Mandelic Acid with a clinician if you are unsure which ingredient suits your concern, skin tone, eczema history, or tendency to pigment after irritation.

When professional advice is needed

Arrange an assessment for a persistent rash, painful acne, unexplained dark patches, or repeated reactions to skincare. Stop the product and seek prompt care for swelling, blistering, severe pain, or widespread peeling. Ask before using either acid during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or while treating an active skin condition.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which acid matches your goal, how often to use it, what ingredients to separate from it, and how long to pause before a procedure. Bring the product label and mention allergies, prescribed creams, and previous peel reactions.

Questions people ask

Can I use lactic and mandelic acid together?

It is usually wiser to introduce one at a time, because combining exfoliants can make irritation harder to identify and control.

Is mandelic acid always gentler than lactic acid?

No. Some people tolerate a mandelic formulation well, but the full formula and your skin barrier determine the response.
