Short answer

For pigmentation concerns such as melasma, lactic acid may brighten surface tone gently, but irritation can deepen uneven colour.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Potential benefit
Smoother surface texture and a brighter-looking tone.
Key caution
Irritation may worsen the appearance of pigmentation.

What the acid can and cannot do

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid. It loosens connections between surface cells and attracts moisture, which can make dull or uneven areas look smoother. Pigmentation, however, may sit deeper than the surface and can have causes such as hormonal influence, inflammation, or repeated light exposure. An exfoliant does not identify or remove those drivers.

Melasma often appears as recurring, symmetric brown or grey-brown patches, especially on the face. Dark patches or uneven skin tone can have other explanations, so a new, isolated, changing, or symptomatic mark should not be self-treated solely with acid.

Use a low-irritation plan

Patch test a fragrance-free product, then apply a thin layer to dry skin on an occasional schedule if tolerated. Use moisturiser to reduce dryness and avoid stacking lactic acid with scrubs, retinoids, or other strong brightening products without professional guidance. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection and shade are central because light can maintain pigment and irritation can trigger more colour.

If patches persist, a clinician may discuss a chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, microneedling, or laser toning depending on the pattern and skin type. These treatments need careful selection when pigment is prone to returning.

When to seek care

Stop using the product if you develop burning, swelling, blistering, or prolonged redness. Seek assessment for a rapidly changing patch, bleeding, crusting, pain, or a mark that looks different from the surrounding pigmentation. Arrange dermatology advice when facial patches recur or when home care is causing more darkness.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern fits melasma, what may be triggering it, and whether lactic acid is appropriate for your skin tone and current barrier. Ask how to combine light protection with prescription or procedure-based options and how to recognise irritation early.

Questions people ask

Can lactic acid cure melasma?

No. It may support surface renewal, but melasma can recur and often needs a broader management plan.

Should I use it on a dark patch every day?

Start less often and follow the product directions; daily use is not suitable if the area becomes irritated.
