Lactic acid chemical peel: what to know

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid. In a chemical peel, it loosens connections between surface cells so dull or uneven surface buildup can shed. A professional may consider it for mild texture concerns, selected acne-related marks, sun spots or uneven pigmentation. It is not the same as using a strong home exfoliant: concentration, pH, application time and skin preparation affect the response. Peeling, tightness, temporary redness or sensitivity can follow.

Tell the practitioner about eczema, active infection, cold sores, recent waxing, retinoids, other exfoliants and any history of dark marks after irritation. Follow the preparation plan and do not pick or scrub flaking skin. Use a gentle cleanser, bland moisturizer and daily sunscreen afterward. Pause unapproved acids, retinoids and fragranced products until the skin has settled. A clinician may choose a different approach for melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, where inflammation can deepen color.
