Lacosamide rash: what to know

A medication rash can appear as scattered red spots, raised bumps, itching or more widespread redness. The timing after starting lacosamide or changing its dose is useful information, but does not prove the medicine is responsible. Other possibilities include contact dermatitis, heat rash, infection or a pre-existing inflammatory condition. A clinician may ask about new soaps, foods, medicines and recent illness, then inspect the skin and mouth.

Contact the clinician who prescribed lacosamide as soon as you notice a new rash. Do not make a change to an antiseizure medicine on your own; the prescriber can balance skin safety with seizure control and tell you whether the next dose should be taken. Record when the rash began, photograph changes in good light, and list every medicine and supplement. Avoid adding a new cream unless advised, particularly products that could mask progression.

Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, painful skin, sores in the mouth or eyes, fever, or rapidly spreading redness. These features can signal a serious medicine reaction. Do not wait for a routine appointment if the skin is tender or you feel significantly unwell.
