What should you know about laboratory test for liver?

A liver panel may include enzymes released when liver cells or bile ducts are irritated, a pigment called bilirubin, and proteins made by the liver. An unusual result does not identify one diagnosis by itself. Recent illness, medicines, alcohol, strenuous activity and other health conditions can affect some values. Your clinician interprets the pattern, your symptoms and previous results together.

Ask whether you need to fast, which medicines or supplements should be mentioned, and when results will be reviewed. Give a complete list of medicines, herbal products and alcohol use. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Follow-up may involve repeating blood tests or arranging imaging when the pattern needs more explanation.

Arrange prompt medical advice for yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, pale stools, severe upper-abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion or marked sleepiness. Seek urgent help if these symptoms are sudden, severe or accompanied by collapse or bleeding.
