L5-S1 is the lowest mobile disc level in the lumbar spine. The exact injection target may be an epidural space, a facet joint or another structure, so the name alone does not describe the entire procedure. Imaging guidance helps the clinician place the needle accurately. A local anaesthetic may be used, while corticosteroid is intended to reduce local inflammation. Relief, if it occurs, may be temporary or incomplete; the injection does not repair a disc, remove a bone spur or permanently change the spine.

The reason for treatment matters. Pain from an irritated nerve, facet joint or another source may call for a different injection approach. The clinician should match the scan and examination with the pain pattern before proceeding.
