What should you know about KT tape for lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is swelling caused by a problem with lymph drainage. It can develop after lymph node surgery or radiotherapy, including after breast cancer treatment. Kinesiology tape is flexible and is placed on the skin in strips. The proposed effect is a light change in skin tension that may support movement of fluid through nearby lymph pathways.

Tape does not remove the underlying cause and is not suitable for every person. Skin sensitivity, open areas, infection, fragile skin, reduced sensation and allergy to adhesive all matter. A lymphoedema therapist can assess the limb and show where and how to apply it.

Have the first application demonstrated by a trained clinician, especially if swelling affects an arm, breast, leg or face. Clean and dry the skin, avoid creams beneath the adhesive, and follow the advised wear and removal instructions. Check the skin regularly rather than waiting for discomfort.

Tape is often considered alongside movement, skin care, compression and specialist lymphoedema therapy. Gentle exercise and protecting the skin from cuts can support the wider plan. Remove the tape slowly if it causes itching, burning, blistering, increased swelling or pain.

Seek prompt advice for rapidly increasing swelling, redness, warmth, tenderness, leaking fluid or fever, because these can indicate infection or another problem. Urgent help is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain or fainting. Do not cover a worsening skin reaction with more tape.
