KT Tape for the AC Joint: What to Know

Short answer
KT tape may ease movement around an irritated AC joint, but it cannot repair a sprained ligament or confirm the injury.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main purpose
- Light support and movement awareness
- What it cannot do
- Repair a ligament or diagnose a fracture
- Remove it if
- Skin irritation, numbness, or colour change appears
What the tape can and cannot do
The AC joint connects the collarbone to the highest part of the shoulder blade. A fall onto the shoulder or a force through the arm can strain its supporting ligaments. Tape placed around the shoulder may give gentle skin-level support and help you notice positions that aggravate symptoms. It should not be tight enough to cause tingling, numbness, colour change, or swelling in the arm. Tape cannot realign the joint, heal a torn ligament by itself, or show whether a fracture is present.
Using tape sensibly
Have a physiotherapist demonstrate placement, especially if the shoulder is bruised, visibly raised, or difficult to move. Apply it to clean, dry skin and remove it slowly if itching, burning, blistering, or a rash develops. Keep the shoulder gently moving within a comfortable range, while avoiding lifting or contact activity that sharply increases pain. A clinician may recommend physiotherapy for motion and gradual strengthening; a splint or sling may be considered for selected injuries.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt assessment after a significant fall, a visible change in the joint contour, severe pain, or inability to raise the arm. Seek urgent help if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or weak, or if chest pain or breathing difficulty occurs. Ongoing pain, night discomfort, or loss of shoulder function also deserves an examination because AC joint injury can overlap with fracture or other shoulder problems.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the AC joint is sprained, separated, or affected by another shoulder injury; which movements and loads are safe now; whether imaging is needed; and when to begin rehabilitation.

Questions people ask
Can KT tape heal an AC joint sprain?
No. It may support comfort and movement awareness, while the ligament heals through time and an appropriate activity plan.
Can I wear tape over bruised skin?
Ask a clinician first. Bruising, broken skin, or marked swelling can make taping unsuitable and may need examination.
